The Western Open was a professional golf tournament in the United States, for most of its history an event on the PGA Tour. The tournament's founding in 1899 actually pre-dated the start of the Tour, which is generally dated from 1916, the year the PGA of America was founded.
In mid-1910s, the tournament began to evolve into an event of national significance. In 1915, the Massachusetts Golf Association decided to open the tournament to players from other states. [12] [13] Star players from outside Massachusetts like Jim Barnes and Walter Hagen decided to play. [14] Hagen won the tournament. [15]
The Western Golf Association, which founded and ran the Western Open, runs the BMW Championship. In 2012, 2013, and 2014, the PGA Tour named the BMW Championship its Tournament of the Year.
