Sections of a steam locomotive showing the many fire-tubes which carry the hot gases of the fire through the boiler to heat the water and so create steam. Boiler design is the process of designing boilers used for various purposes. The main function of a boiler is to heat water to generate steam.
Hence, steam boilers are used as generators to produce electricity in the energy business. It is also used in rice mills for parboiling and drying. Besides many different application areas in the industry for example in heating systems or for cement production, steam boilers are used in agriculture as well for soil steaming. [8]
A steam generator is a form of low water-content boiler, similar to a flash steam boiler. The usual construction is as a spiral coil of water-tube , arranged as a single, or monotube , coil. Circulation is once-through and pumped under pressure, as a forced-circulation boiler . [ 1 ]
T–s diagram of a typical Rankine cycle operating between pressures of 0.06 bar and 50 bar. Left from the bell-shaped curve is liquid, right from it is gas, and under it is saturated liquid–vapour equilibrium. There are four processes in the Rankine cycle. The states are identified by numbers (in brown) in the T–s diagram.
Fire-tube boilers usually have a comparatively low rate of steam production, but high steam storage capacity. Fire-tube boilers mostly burn solid fuels, but are readily adaptable to those of the liquid or gas variety. Fire-tube boilers may also be referred to as "scotch-marine" or "marine" type boilers. In smaller boilers, additional generating tubes are separate in the furnace, while larger utility boilers rely on the water-filled tubes that make up the walls of the furnace to generate steam. The heated water/steam mixture then rises into the steam drum. Here, saturated steam is drawn off the top of the drum.
A sectional diagram of a typical steam boiler feed injector, simplified to show the major parts common to such injectors, showing typical proportions, and using colour and shading to hint at temperature, pressure, and velocity variations in the fluid flows. The SVG was hand coded using a text editor.
Three drum/four drum boilers – are the veterans of the normal day boilers, although they are still used in some industries. Bi drum boiler – are used for power generation and steam generation both. For power generation they are used now seldom and are replaced by single drum boilers as the bi drum boilers are non-reheat units.
