Olga Grjasnowa [1] [2] was born into a Russian-Jewish family in Baku, Azerbaijan. Her father, Oleg Grjasnow, practiced law and her mother, Julija Winnikowa, was a musicologist. The family came to Hesse in 1996 as so-called 'quota refugees' (Kontingentflüchtlinge). Grjasnowa started learning German when she was 11 years old.
Vapnyar spent the first 19 years of her life in Moscow, where she earned a degree in Russian Language and Literature.Her mother was a professor of math education. In 1998, pregnant, she moved to the United States and later settled on Staten Island with her husband.
