The Barkley Marathons is an ultramarathon trail race held each year in Frozen Head State Park in Morgan County, Tennessee, United States.Described as "The Race That Eats Its Young", it is known for its extreme difficulty, purposefully difficult application process, and many strange traditions, having been completed only 26 times by 20 runners since 1995.
The marathon was first held in April 2000 when 3,230 men and 2,589 women completed the event. As the event grew in popularity, a half-marathon was added in 2002. This was soon followed by the addition of a kids marathon. A 5k run was added to the race options as well as wheelchair versions of the marathon, half-marathon, and 5k races.
The 42.195-kilometre (26.219 mi) race was established in 2005 and has been run annually ever since. The 2020 in-person edition of the race was cancelled due to the coronavirus pandemic , with all registrants given the option of running the race virtually, transferring their entry to 2021 or 2022, or obtaining a refund.
