The Academy Award for Best Animated Short Film is an award given by the Academy of Motion Picture Arts and Sciences (AMPAS) as part of the annual Academy Awards, or Oscars, since the 5th Academy Awards (with different names), covering the year 1931–32, to the present.
Animation historian Jerry Beck had posted on Cartoon Research lists of animated shorts from various studios considered for nomination of the Academy Award for Best Animated Short Film, beginning with 1948 and ending for the time being with 1986. [1] [2] Missing gaps on that site are 1949, 1950, 1976, 1981, 1982 and 1985. [3] [4] [2]
It consists of articles about 50 highly regarded animated short films made in North America and other notable cartoons, which are ranked according to a poll of 1,000 people working in the animation industry and film critics. [1] [2] Each cartoon is under 30 minutes long and cel animated (with the exception of Gertie the Dinosaur).
