The union was founded at a conference in East Berlin on 29 October 1949 as the International Union of Trade Unions of Postal, Telephone and Telegraph Workers.The name was changed to the Trade Union International of Public and Allied Employees (TUI-PAE) in 1955 during a conference in Vienna, when it broadened its scope to include workers in the health, finance and public administration areas.
In 2007, the union changed its name from SEIU 775 to SEIU Healthcare 775NW, as part of a reorganization of its parent union, the Service Employees International Union, but changed the name back to SEIU 775 in 2014.
