Under aerobic conditions in soils or pure cultures, products of bromoxynil degradation often retain the original bromine groups. The herbicide, and one of its common degradation products (3,5-dibromo-4-hydroxybenzoic acid) have been shown to undergo metabolic reductive dehalogenation by the microorganism Desulfitobacterium chlororespirans. Ioxynil is a post-emergent [4] selective nitrile herbicide. It is used in Australia, New Zealand [ 5 ] and Japan [ 6 ] to control broadleaf weeds via the inhibition of photosynthesis . It is used notably on onion crops, [ 7 ] among others, normally at 300–900 g/Ha. [ 8 ]
