Until 1965 this was a segregated (African-American) school. It was rededicated as Matthew Henson Middle School. [4] The high school is named for Rear Admiral Henry E. Lackey of the local Naval facility, who was credited with helping to start the school at Indian Head, Maryland, in 1920, one of the first high schools in the county. [5]
