The population of the community in 1956 was 75. In the early 1960s, the Trans-Canada Highway (Highway 104) was built through the community, causing outmigration. Today's population is roughly 171 inhabitants, most of whom commute to work in nearby centres of Pictou, New Glasgow and industrial Pictou County, or west to Truro.

Pictou thrived as a port, and the United States government recognized its importance and operated a consulate from 1837 to 1897 to look after its interests in Pictou County coal and fish from the Gulf of St. Lawrence. It was the main route for travelers to Upper Canada in the ice-free months until the opening of the Intercolonial Railway in 1876.
