According to the Academic Ranking of World Universities, the department is the 9th best physics department in the world and best in Europe. [4] It is ranked 2nd place in the UK by Grade Point Average according to the Research Excellence Framework (REF) in 2021, being only behind the University of Sheffield. [5]
In partnership with the University of Waterloo, PI conducts Perimeter Scholars International (PSI), [37] a master's level course in theoretical physics. [38] The 10-month course was inaugurated in August 2009, and admits around 30 scholars per year.

The Nordic Institute for Theoretical Physics, or NORDITA, or Nordita (Danish: Nordisk Institut for Teoretisk Fysik [1]), is an international organisation for research in theoretical physics. It was established as Nord isk I nstitut for T eoretisk A tomfysik in 1957 by Niels Bohr and the Swedish physicist Torsten Gustafson .
The Kavli Institute for Theoretical Physics (KITP) is a research institute of the University of California, Santa Barbara dedicated to theoretical physics. KITP is one of 20 Kavli Institutes . The National Science Foundation has been the principal supporter of the institute since it was founded as the Institute for Theoretical Physics in 1979.
In the national 2020 CHE University Ranking, the department is rated in the top group for the majority of criteria, including teaching, study organization, and overall study situation. [ 11 ] The Department of Physics is ranked 1st in Germany and 15th in the world in the QS World University Rankings. [ 8 ]
