In June 1839, the Colonial Pearl, a weekly newspaper in Halifax, Nova Scotia, reported that one of its readers had created a "photogenic drawing," probably of samples of flora such as ferns or flowers, created without a camera by placing objects on "salted" or sensitized paper.
