The G16E-GTS is a turbocharged engine model with 10.5:1 compression ratio and D-4ST direct/port injection system with multi-oil jet piston cooling, large-diameter exhaust valves and a part-machined intake port. The turbo boost is set between 1.4 and 1.81 bar (20.3 and 26.3 psi).
Although a powerful engine for its time, the 16 Valve engine can experience some problems that can be solved easily. One of the few problems is oil pump gear problems leading to broken timing belts. The oil pump gear itself can fail around the mounting flange, or, more often, the weak 8.8 (grade 5) grade bolt holding the gear can break.

The G-series engine development work began in 2002, out of the need at MG Rover Group to replace both the common-rail M47R engine in the Rover 75 and MG ZT and the pump-injector L-series engine in the Rover 25, Rover 45, MG ZR and MG ZS. The engine, known as Galileo, spent three years in development prior to MG Rover Group’s collapse in 2005.
This new engine was known as R92A and used for powering the 1965-1966 Daihatsu P3 and 1967 Daihatsu P5 race cars. The cylinder head was also modified from 8-valve OHV to 16-valve DOHC, an extremely rare configuration at that time.
