The county's headquarter is Migori, which is also its largest town. In the 2019 National Census, Migori County had a population of 1,116,436, almost 200,000 more than the 917,170 recorded in 2009. [1] Migori County is located in the sugar belt wetlands of western Kenya and is at the heart of the African tropics.
At national level, sub-counties take a more administrative function like security, statistical purposes, provision of government services, etc. Even though the sub-counties are divisions of counties, powers to create new national sub-counties lies with the national government. As of 2023, there are 314 sub-counties, compared to 290 constituencies.
There are five wards in the constituency, all electing councillors to the Migori County council. The constituency was established for the 1997 elections. Its mainly inhabited by two ethnic tribes namely Luo and the Abaluhya, who live harmoniously, with kiswahili being the major language in this sub county region.
Being a semi-arid region, residents of Nyatike mainly depend on fishing as the major economic activity. Around the areas of Macalder and Osiri, small-scale gold mining has also become a source of livelihood. Currently, the constituency is a major player in Migori County politics as it has the highest number of voters of the 8 constituencies.
