In 1980, the school launched a Doctor of Social Welfare program and in 1987, the New York State Education Department authorized the school to grant the PhD degree. In 1968, [16] the New York College of Music, which was an American conservatory of music originally founded in 1878 and located in Manhattan, [17] closed and merged with NYU, leading to the music department of the School of Education to serve both in its original capacity and as the spiritual continuation of the New York College of Music.
