Gerard William Battersby (born May 15, 1960) is an American Catholic prelate who has served as an auxiliary bishop for the Archdiocese of Detroit from 2016-2024. On March 19, 2024, he was appointed Bishop of La Crosse. [1] He was installed during a ceremony on May 20, 2024 at the Cathedral of St Joseph the Workman. [2]

He was born in London, the son of William Hamilton, a Scottish bencher of Lincoln's Inn, and succeeded his father in 1754. He was educated at Winchester, Lincoln's Inn and Oriel College, Oxford. With his father's fortune he entered political life and became Member of Parliament for Petersfield in Hampshire.
Walter fitz Gilbert was present at the Battle of Halidon Hill in 1333, fighting in the division of the High Steward, (later Robert II of Scotland), but is thought to have escaped the carnage there. [10] As he became more deeply involved, Battersby was eventually forced to resign from the board of Battersby's Hats in August 1939 (he was known as "the mad hatter" in fascist circles [11]) and he left his wife and children to "serve Hitler".
