The Assyrian Mastiff, [2] [3] was a landrace of dog found in Assyria. This dog was often used as a livestock guardian against predators, as well as for lion and wild horse-hunting. The modern Assyrian Shepherd (more recently also known as the Kurdish Mastiff ) may be a descendant of the Assyrian mastiff.

[1] [2] Mastiffs are among the largest dogs, and typically have a short coat, a long low-set tail and large feet; the skull is large and bulky, the muzzle broad and short (brachycephalic) and the ears drooping and pendant-shaped.
Similarly, there isn't a standard weight for most English Mastiffs. Males can be anywhere from 160 to 230 lbs. while females can be 120 to 170 lbs. These dogs are seriously big!

This standard was recognised internationally in 1995 when the standard was published by the FCI, with the English name Saint Miguel Cattle Dog. Although described (and formerly used) as a cattle dog, the breed is actually a mastiff, and is thus recognised by the FCI in its "Group 2, Section 2, Molossoid breeds" as breed number 340. [1]
