In July 2009, a nationally publicized incident occurred at the Valley Swim Club in Huntingdon Valley. A group of mostly African-American children from a day care center were removed from the club due to the children's race. On July 15, 2009, the day care center successfully filed a federal civil rights lawsuit against the club. [5]

His son Richard Thornton, who swam for him at U. Cal Berkeley, was a founder and long serving coach for the San Ramon Valley Swim Club, an Olympic Swim team member in 1980, and a national team coach. Richard died in January 2024, in a drowning accident after suffering from multiple myloma, a blood disease.
