My understanding about the bulge in a Nonic glass was that it is for strength when treated roughly - if you knock two pint glasses together, or knock one over then a conical glass will take the impact at the edge where it is already weak due to being an edge, yet a Nonic glass takes the impact on a curved section which is the strongest shape.
