Arnoldus Pannevis proposed an Afrikaans Bible translation in 1872 in a letter to the Zuid Afrikaan newspaper. CP Hoogenhout published a book called The history of Joseph for Afrikaans children and households in 1873. Pannevis also wrote to the British and Foreign Bible Society in 1874 to request such a translation, but the request was denied. [1]
The Bible Society of Nigeria published a revised translation in 2014. Another translation called Sabon Rai Don Kowa was published in 2020. The same year, the first complete Bible in Hausa ajami script was published (Biblical texts had been published before, the first ones during the last years of the 19th century).
A landmark in the development of the language was the translation of the whole Bible into Afrikaans. While significant advances had been made in the textual criticism of the Bible, especially the Greek New Testament, the 1933 translation followed the Textus Receptus and was closely akin to the Statenbijbel.
