The White River National Wildlife Refuge (officially Dale Bumpers White River National Wildlife Refuge) is a 160,756 acres (650.56 km 2) wildlife refuge located in Desha, Monroe, Phillips, and Arkansas counties in the U.S. state of Arkansas.
The refuge encompasses land in the Arkansas counties of Jackson, Woodruff, Prairie, and Monroe. The Cache River NWR has gradually expanded to its present size through acquisition from private owners of land. Most of the land in the refuge, and that planned for acquisition, had been drained and used for agriculture.
In 1952, after the construction of dikes, roads and hunting blinds, part of the area was opened to public hunting. In 1957, a new canal from the Arkansas River was built. However, relatively little water from the Arkansas was pumped into the wetland because of drought and claims by other entities on the water supply.
The Wapanocca National Wildlife Refuge is a 5,484 acre (22 km 2) wildlife refuge in Crittenden County, Arkansas, managed by the United States Fish and Wildlife Service. Wapanocca National Wildlife Refuge was established in 1961 from land acquired from the former "Wapanocca Outing Club" which was a prestigious hunting club formed in 1886.
After announcing its most recent land acquisition in January, the agency owns more than 1.6 million acres of public land. That amounts to roughly 5% of the commonwealth's 29 million acres.
Contiguous with the refuge on the east is the Big Lake Wildlife Management Area, owned by the state of Arkansas. It comprises 12,320 acres (49.9 km 2) and is open for hunting deer, waterfowl, and small game. The wildlife management area consists mostly of bottomland hardwood forests.
Bald Knob hosts the largest winter population of pintails in Arkansas. Other winter waterfowl species include mallards, blue-winged teal, wood ducks, Canada geese and white-fronted and lesser snow geese. Agricultural land, river sloughs and brakes, bottomland hardwoods and fallow fields provide a diverse habitat that nurtures wintering waterfowl.
