The university's inception can be traced to the Charter of Abu Dhabi University in the year 2000 by Sheikh Hamdan bin Zayed al-Nayhan, the-then Deputy Prime Minister of the United Arab Emirates. Following three years of planning, the Abu Dhabi University was inaugurated in June 2003 [ 8 ] [ 9 ] and opened its doors to students in September 2003.
Provision of education in the UAE began shortly after the establishment of the federation with the inception of the first university, the United Arab Emirates University, located in Al Ain, Abu Dhabi. Since then, the country has progressed with efforts of ensuring high literacy rates, modern programs and women's share in education.
Abu Dhabi University's Al Ain branch was inaugurated in September 2003 simultaneously with the establishment of its main campus in Abu Dhabi. [4] It enrolled around 400 pupils as inaugural students [5] and was the only satellite campus of the university in the country [6] until 2011 when the institute began planning to expand into the al-Dhafra region. [7]
