William H. Tripp Jr (1920–1971) was an American naval architect who created many popular wooden and later fiberglass sailboat designs. Tripp used the diminutive , Bill , as his usual first name. [ 1 ] [ 2 ] [ 3 ]
Initially, a Dutch company, Van Breems International (VBI), was to build Tripp's design as the Vitesse 40. [2] VBI never built a hull, and sold the rights to American Boatbuilding Corporation in 1957. [2] The Mark I was first known as the Vitesse 40 and later, with some modifications, renamed the Block Island 40. [8]
Within three years, brothers William and Charles, and George I., Sr. died. [2] [4] George I. ("Sonny") Hodgdon, Jr., who was born in 1922 and reputedly started work in the yard at an early age, rebuilt the boat-building sheds and obtained a contract to build the first boat designed by William Tripp Sr., Katingo.
