Denham Springs is run under a Mayor-council form of government. The current mayor, Gerard Landry, has been in office since 2014, being reelected in 2018 after support from the city in his recovery efforts after the flood of 2016. The property was purchased by Thomas Freeman in 1817, from James Rheem, who acquired it from a Spanish land grant in 1804. Freeman, a free person of color, was the first African American to own property in the Greensburg District (St. Helena Parish), the southern portion of which became Livingston Parish. [2] [3]
