Stevens Point is a city in and the county seat of Portage County, Wisconsin, United States. [6] Its population was 25,666 as of the 2020 census. [7] It forms the core of the Stevens Point micropolitan statistical area, which had a population of 70,377 in 2020. [8] The city was incorporated in 1858.
Damage from flood waters and backed-up sewage led to a decision in November 2010 to demolish the former St. Michael Hospital, a seven-story 800,000-square-foot (74,000 m 2) building that had been largely vacant since the hospital closed in 2006. [8]
In 1908, the Sisters of St. Joseph of the Third Order of St. Francis came from their motherhouse in Stevens Point, Wisconsin to Ohio to staff schools in Polish parishes. A provincial convent was established in 1926. In 1939, there was a shortage of hospital beds and emergency treatment facilities in the city.
In 1912, at the request of several Madison physicians and local clergy, eight Sisters of Mary arrived from St. Louis, Missouri where the congregation had founded St. Mary's Infirmary. They proceeded to establish a "Sisters' Hospital" for the city of Madison. St. Mary's Hospital opened its doors and its 70 beds on September 22, 1912. [3]
