The BRIT Awards (often simply called the BRITs) are the British Phonographic Industry's annual popular music awards. The name was originally a shortened form of "British", "Britain", or "Britannia" (in the early days the awards were sponsored by Britannia Music Club), but subsequently became a backronym for British Record Industry Trusts Show. In order to be eligible for the Artist of the Year award, "an artist must have achieved at least one top 40 album or two top 20 singles" during the Brits eligibility period, which generally runs from early December of one year to a similar date of the following year (e.g. the eligibility period for the 2023 Brit awards was 10 December 2021 to 9 December 2022).
The category was introduced in 2022 following a restructuring which resulted in the removal of gendered categories. [4] It is the first award to recognise individual songs by international artists and only the second category, following the Brit Award for International Album (1977, 2002-2011), to honor the work of international artists rather than the artists themselves.
