Volgograd State Medical University is located in Volgograd which is situated in the southern part of Russia on the west bank of the Volga River. It started as Stalingrad Medical Institute founded in 1935. In 1993 it received the status of the Academy, and in 2003 it was granted the status of the University. It is headed by Vladimir I. Petrov.

At the end of April 1942, the staff was expanded by a group of teachers and students of the Leningrad Pharmaceutical and 2nd Leningrad Medical Institutes. [2] In March 1943, the Pyatigorsk Pharmaceutical Institute was organized on the basis of evacuated Dnepropetrovsk and Leningrad universities.
The university is attended by more than 14 thousand students and postgraduates. Established partnerships with the Moscow State University, St. Petersburg State University, University of Cologne, University of Sorbonne, InHolland University (Netherlands) and other higher educational institutions of Russia, Europe and America.
