Volgograd State Medical University is located in Volgograd which is situated in the southern part of Russia on the west bank of the Volga River. It started as Stalingrad Medical Institute founded in 1935. In 1993 it received the status of the Academy, and in 2003 it was granted the status of the University. It is headed by Vladimir I. Petrov.

In 1994, the Institute achieved the status of academy — the Pyatigorsk State Pharmaceutical Academy. In 2012, the academy was renamed again (to the Pyatigorsk Medical and Pharmaceutical Institute ) and joined the Volgograd State Medical University as a branch.
