However, when trying to protect Kawaki, Naruto and Sasuke are defeated by the leader of Kara, Jigen, who seals Naruto away while Sasuke escapes. Boruto and his teammates save Naruto when Boruto's Karma causes him to be possessed by Momoshiki. Sasuke discovers all Karma users will be taken over by the Ōtsutsuki clan, including Jigen and Boruto.
The series' final antagonist, Kaguya Otsutsuki, is based on Kaguya Hime. Similar to the references of the Sharingans, Kaguya also references Japanese mythology, with both Sasuke and Naruto being the descendants of her children in a similar fashion to Amaterasu, the powerful Goddess of the Sun, and Susanoo, the God of thunder.
Boruto's Karma activates as Jigen forcibly activates Kawaki's Karma and teleports into Konoha intent on bringing back his adopted son.
