The fort was originally named Camp Wolters in honor of Brigadier General Jacob F. Gary and Wolters Air Force Bases in Texas is where the Air Force had been conducting this training. Also transferred to the Army and lacking adequate facilities at Fort Rucker, Army Aviation continued primary fixed-wing training at Camp Gary until 1959 and primary rotary-wing training at Fort Wolters until 1973.
By 1970 Fort Wolters covered 8,500 acres (34 km 2) and leased an additional 1,700 to help handle the 1,200 helicopters used at the camp. By January 1, 1973, 40,000 students had completed the twenty-week training program.
