Some adhesives, oils, and varnishes, will clog sandpaper and can even make sanding impossible. After the floor is prepared, the sanding begins. Stronger paper or backing increases the ease of sanding wood. The harder the backing material, the faster the sanding, the faster the wear of the paper and the rougher the sanded surface.
The typical installation thickness of these products is about 1 ⁄ 4 inch (6 mm) to ensure there is enough mass present for the material to flow, although some self-leveling products now exist that can be installed at an average thickness of only 1 ⁄ 8 inch (3 mm).

The operator experiences considerable vibration, and the cams are generally made from hardened steel to avoid them wearing out quickly. In practice, drills are restricted to standard masonry bits up to 13 mm (1/2 inch) in diameter.
