Boesmansgat (or Bushmansgat), also known in English as "Bushman's Hole", is a deep submerged freshwater cave (or sinkhole) in the Northern Cape province of South Africa, which has been dived to a depth of 282.6 metres (927 ft). Boesmansgat was believed to have first been explored by amateur diver Mike Rathbourne, in 1977.
Deon had logged about 200 dives when he was invited to join some South Africa Cave Diving Association divers at Bushman's Hole over the 1994 Christmas break. They planned a descent to 150 metres (492 ft) and asked Deon to dive support. He was thrilled. Two weeks before the expedition, Deon's grandfather died.
The cave elevation was 1,550 metres (5,090 ft) and the dive duration was 9 hours and 40 minutes. [2] On this dive, Shaw discovered the body of Deon Dreyer, a South African diver who had died in Bushman's Hole ten years previously. The body was at a depth of 270 metres (890 ft).
