Ladd was born Sarah L. Hall in Somerville, Massachusetts, the daughter of John Gill Hall and Sarah Cushing. [1] Little is known about her childhood. On September 7, 1881, she married Charles E. Ladd, [1] a West Coast businessman and son of early Portland (Oregon) mayor William S. Ladd.
In 1996, Ladd's novel Sarah's Psalm was published by Charles Scribner's Sons. It won the 1997 Black Caucus of the American Library Association's literary award for fiction. In 1998 Ladd was the recipient of a MacDowell fellowship. [6] In 2008, Stephen E. Coit painted Ladd's portrait. [7] It hangs in Lowell House at Harvard. [8]
