Willow goes to a local magic shop looking for ingredients to an anti-love spell. Spike, who is hiding at the back of the shop, decides that a spell to make Drusilla love him again would be a good idea. He kills the shopkeeper. At school Willow works on her anti-love spell while arguing with Xander.
Shocked, Xander is advised to call off the wedding. Buffy and Spike discuss the wedding and Spike's attempt to make her jealous with his date, leading Spike to leave with his date. Willow gives Xander a final pep talk. Anya rehearses her vows, and Buffy stalls the guests with charades. Anya learns Xander is missing and panics.
Anya seeks vengeance on Xander and when looking for someone who wants the same, she finds comfort with Spike. Xander sees their impulsive behavior through a camera and tries to stake Spike. Willow and Tara arrange a date, which ends with the two of them kissing.
The series begins as Buffy, Willow, and their friend Xander (Nicholas Brendon) are in 10th grade and Willow is a shy, nerdy girl with little confidence. She has inherent magical abilities and begins to study witchcraft; as the series progresses, Willow becomes more sure of herself and her magical powers become significant.
Willow is already there investigating the cave and Gnarl spots her. The rest of the gang enters the cave as well, but they do not see Willow. The demon scratches Dawn's stomach and paralyzes her. Buffy and Xander take Dawn out of the cave and cover up the entrance, unintentionally trapping Willow with Gnarl.
After Dawn panics at losing Buffy again, Willow discovers that the demon can only survive if Buffy is killed. The demon, which had been housed in Xander's body while Willow shared this information, heads for the Slayer. Buffy is attacked by the formless demon. Willow and Tara cast a spell to make the demon solid, and Buffy kills it with an axe.
These include Xander Harris (Nicholas Brendon), a young man without particular strengths or talents, but devoted to Buffy and her calling, and Willow Rosenberg (Alyson Hannigan), a young woman who has grown from a shy but gifted student into a strong woman and powerful user of magic.
Overhearing this, Xander leaves to confront Willow. Willow speaks to Buffy telepathically, telling her she deserves the right to die as a warrior; and raises earth-creatures to battle her and Dawn. As Willow begins her final ritual of destruction, Xander confronts her and physically tries to stop her from completing it.
