Mike Rose (May 14, 1944 – August 15, 2021) was an American scholar of education who studied literacy and the struggles of working-class America. He was a Research Professor of Social Research Methodology in the UCLA Graduate School of Education and Information Studies .
Lives on the Boundary, written by American scholar Mike Rose, is a 1989 work of non-fiction that explores the challenges and successes associated with literacy at the margins of America’s education system. Much of the work is autobiographical and explores Rose’s own challenges both learning and teaching reading and writing.
The stepson of British author John Masters, Rose was educated at Cheltenham College, St. Edmund Hall, Oxford, and the Sorbonne. [1]Rose enlisted in the Territorial and Army Volunteer Reserve (TAVR) as a private soldier and was commissioned into the Gloucestershire Regiment TAVR on 17 March 1959, [2] transferring to the Rifle Brigade as a second lieutenant on 1 June.
