Vanderbilt died of complications following an appendectomy in Washington, D.C., on March 6, 1914. [1] He was interred in the Vanderbilt family mausoleum at the Moravian Cemetery in New Dorp in Staten Island, New York. He died from a pulmonary embolus, a blood clot in the lungs, about 10 days after surgery.
