The naval Battle of Preveza was fought off the shores of Preveza on 29 September 1538, where the Ottoman fleet of Hayreddin Barbarossa defeated a united Christian fleet under the Genoese captain Andrea Doria. This day is a Turkish Navy National Holiday, and some of today's Turkish submarines are called "Preveze".
Preveza was established as a prefecture in 1915 (Greek: Νομός Πρέβεζας). As a part of the 2011 Kallikratis government reform, the regional unit Preveza was created out of the former prefecture Preveza. The prefecture had the same territory as the present regional unit.
Rizovouni was an independent community until 1997, when it was absorbed into the municipality of Thesprotiko with the homonymous village. The Battle of Preveza (also known as Prevesa) was a naval engagement that took place on 28 September 1538 near Preveza in the Ionian Sea in northwestern Greece between an Ottoman fleet and that of a Holy League. The battle was an Ottoman victory which occurred in the same area in the Ionian Sea as the Battle of Actium in 31 BC. [5]
Anthousa (Greek: Ανθούσα), known before 1927 as Rapeza (Greek: Ράπεζα [2] [3]) is a village in the municipality of Parga, Preveza regional unit of Epirus, in western Greece. In 2021 its population was 673 for the community, which also includes the village Trikorfo.
