In 1948, Grove Farm purchased the 3,000-acre (1,200 ha) McBryde plantation which included the Koloa sugar mill. By 1974, sugar production was leased to Alexander & Baldwin, while the company moved into residential and resort real estate operations. [4]
A review of Kōloa history and working conditions reveals the motivations of plantation owners to import labor resulting in a massive wave of globalization for the islands. Kōloa plantation used a contract system that gave laborers an interest in the crop, but prevented them from finding other employment without penalties.
Spouting Horn is a blowhole located on the southern coast of Kauai in the Koloa district. This area of Kauai is known for its crashing waves (nearby Poipu translates to "crashing" [ 1 ] ). These waves erode lava rocks on the coastline which can create narrow openings, as is the case with Spouting Horn.
Pōhakuloa Training Area lies in a high plateau between lower slopes of Mauna Kea to approximately 6,800 feet (2,100 m) in elevation and to about 9,000 feet (2,700 m) on Mauna Loa. The training area is about midway between Hilo, on the east coast and the Army landing site at Kawaihae Harbor. [5] It is used by both the U.S. Army and Marine Corps.
The resort has two golf courses: The Bay Course and The Plantation Course. The Bay Course meanders around historic buildings and tropical gardens to the coastline. It was the host course to the Kapalua LPGA Classic , a full-field tournament on the LPGA Tour in 2008. [ 1 ]
