The village of Hannastown was laid out and originally settled in 1768–1769. It consisted of thirty log houses, two taverns, and a garrison palisaded fort, and was the site of the first English court administering justice west of the Alleghenies between 1773 and 1787.
The parish boundary is somewhat eccentric and extends to the outer edge of Dollar, some three miles (five kilometres) west. Due to this fact, the primary school is somewhat oddly located (the 1876 Act required the school to be at the centre of the parish) and lies over 1 ⁄ 2 mile (800 metres) west of the outer edge of the main village.
