The E92 M3 saw BMW return to the Deutsche Tourenwagen Masters (DTM) after a break of 20 years. In its debut season in 2012, the M3 won the drivers championship, the manufacturers championship and five out of ten races for the season.
The E92 was the last generation to include coupé (and convertible) body styles as a part of the 3 Series range. For later generations, these body styles are marketed as the 4 Series. The BMW M3 (E92/E93) was the last "traditional" M car left, as the rest of the list features turbocharged engines. The next iteration of the M3 (F80) and M4 (F82/F83) features a twin-turbocharged straight-6 engine.
In an interview with Bimmer Today, BMW M division head Frank van Meel said the future M3 sport sedan will keep using the current car's turbocharged six-cylinder motor.

BMW will not offer the M3 in a Steptronic Automatic. It will be SMG III or a 6 Speed manual. BMW would never, ever offer the M3 in an Auto. Never. The E46 had no Automatic, to my knowledge or the article's apparent knowledge. In response to the above, I'm curious if SMG III even exists, and if it does, how long it would be used for.
