A letter sent to the Flag Research Centre by a Cederic Herbert, Flight Lieutenant of the Rhodesian Air Force and member of the Rhodesian Heraldry & Genealogy Society, states that the original design did not include the Zimbabwe Bird, and that Mr. Herbert made the suggestion of its addition due to its uniqueness and historical importance.
