The restaurant occupies numbers 26–29 Dean Street. Nos. 26–28 form a uniform group built in c. 1734 by the carpenter John Nolloth, of St James's, and No. 29 was built in c. 1692 . Furniture maker William Hean lived at 17 Dean Street between 1827 and 1845. Karl Marx lived at 28 Dean Street between 1851 and 1856, above what is now the Hart Brothers restaurant Quo Vadis. The Marxes shared their house in Dean Street with Italian teachers and a cook and were very poor while living in the street.

The Dean Street station was a New York City Subway station on the BMT Franklin Avenue Line. Located on Dean Street west of Franklin Avenue in the Crown Heights neighborhood of Brooklyn, it was serviced by the Franklin Avenue Shuttle.
