Foxing began in 2011 following the end of the group Hunter Gatherer, [1] a post-rock band active from 2008 to 2010 that featured Josh Coll, Jon Hellwig and Matthew Piva. The initial lineup of the band shortly expanded to include Conor Murphy, who was then the bassist of the then active emo group Family Might and formerly the vocalist of the indie/post-rock band Torchlight Red.
On September 25, 2015, Foxing released the second single off the album, "Weave". [10] Writing for The Wall Street Journal , Eric Danton described the song as lush and having a textured feel. [ 10 ] In a positive review of the track, Gabriela Tully Claymore, writing for Stereogum described the track as a majestic return for Foxing.
The disruptions caused by the COVID-19 pandemic caused multiple difficulties for Foxing. They had planned to "road test" a handful of songs on Draw Down the Moon during a May 2020 tour with Bent Knee before the virus brought touring to a halt, and to make up for the lost income usually provided by touring, Murphy and guitarist Eric Hudson both began offering music lessons over Skype. "Secret World" is the final song on Peter Gabriel's 1992 Us album. It was released as a promotional single and reached the Billboard Album Rock Tracks chart and the Canadian Top Singles Chart . Gabriel used the title for his 1993–94 Secret World Tour , where the song served as the final song of his main set.

Beth Bowles of Exclaim! gave the release a 7 out of 10, explaining "while Foxing haven't totally abandoned their previous post-punk roots, Nearer My God clings tight to experimental synth-rock.
