The Royal Johannesburg & Kensington Golf Club is a 36-hole golf complex located in Johannesburg, Gauteng, South Africa. The resort opened in 1890 as the Royal Johannesburg Golf Club, and merged with the Kensington Golf Club in 1998. It is part of the PGA Tour network of golf courses.

The championship was initially contested over just 36 holes until 1908, when it was extended to become a 72-hole tournament. [1] Although non-whites had played in the South African Open before, most notably when Papwa Sewgolum finished second in 1963, it was not until 1972 that black golfers were allowed to compete.

The event was founded in 2007 and was played at the Royal Johannesburg & Kensington Golf Club in Johannesburg, South Africa until 2017. The tournament was contested over both the West and East courses for the first two rounds, enabling a large field of 210 competitors, with the final two rounds being played over the East course following a cut to the top 65 and ties.
Walker ultimately won the championship, defeating H.J. Mackay 1 up in the finals. [1] The second event was held at Port Elizabeth Golf Course and referred to as the SA Tournament. The format changed from match play to stroke play. D.G. Proudfoot won the tournament. It was his first of many victories in the event. [1]
