Pittsfield High School (PHS) traces its founding to 1844 when a town meeting voted to establish the community's first high school. Six years later in November 1850, PHS opened in a three-room wooden building on a site occupied by the current city hall. Several sites and buildings later, the current facility opened on September 9, 1931. [6]
Both Pittsfield high schools are known for their baseball and softball prowess. Taconic High School won state championships in 2017 and 2019 and reached the Final Four in 2023. It was the No. 1 overall seed in the Massachusetts Interscholastic Athletic Association (MIAA) Division III bracket in 2022 and beat city-rival Pittsfield High three times.

In October 2015, The Pittsfield School Building Needs Commission voted to seek contractors for site work, pouring the foundation, steel and precast concrete for the replacement of the old Taconic High School building. [5] This new building would not contain plans to house the WTBR studio or transmission facilities.
