The following list includes all known ball court sites in the United States territories in the Caribbean as identified by the State Historic Preservation Offices of the commonwealth of Puerto Rico and the territory of the U.S. Virgin Islands, documented and surveyed by the National Register Programs Division with the Southeast Regional Office of the National Park Service.
The terrain within the ball courts and plaza have been artificially modified. Several shell middens are scattered irregularly throughout the site and is some instances the ball courts intrude into them, indicating that the site was occupied for an extended period of time with a gradual evolution into a ceremonial center. The ceremonial and religious significance of the later-developed ball game appears to indicate a connection with the Mesoamerican ball-game, [3] and it has been argued that the batey ball-game of the Caribbean is a simplified version of the Maya pok ta pok, specified to the culture and religion of the Taino.
Palo Hincado Site, also known as BA-1, is an archeological site in or near Barranquitas, Puerto Rico. The site includes a plaza, a 33 metres (108 ft) by 15 metres (49 ft) ball court, and petroglyphs.
