The museum has committed to the digitisation of its holdings, much of which are too fragile to put on display to the wider public. A notable example of this digitisation effort was the scanning of Sidmouth Shingle, a 10-volume illustrated record of the Sidmouth's coastline, particularly its beaches, which totals over 4,000 pages. The "Beach House" reported to be the first building on Sidmouth’s seafront, built circa 1790 in plain Georgian style with thatched “shed” (open fronted shelter) attached. The “shed” much frequented by gentry as a meeting place. Gothicised circa 1826 and named “Blossom House”. A fine example of Sidmouth Gothic architecture.
The result is highly idiosyncratic, including two carved self-portraits on either side of the fireplace in the chancel room, and another more whimsical work on the cantilevered staircase, the product of his youth spent in an architect’s office. The Old Chancel is the only grade 1 residential building in Sidmouth.
