  2. FORD TRITON V-10 - The RV Forum Community

The Ford v10 is coupled to a Ford transmission, 4, 5, or 6 speeds depending on the year. The GM 8.1L V8 is usually coupled to the Allison 1000 in pick-ups or Workhorse motorhome chassis, but in the van chassis used for Class C's I suppose it could be one of the car trannys. The "bullet-proof" Allisons are the big boy models like the 3000 and ...

  3. Ford V10 vs Chevy 8.1 - The RV Forum Community

    www.rvforum.net/threads/ford-v10-vs-chevy-8-1.115967

The earlier V10's in motorhomes were the 2-valve, 305 hp version and that is noticeably lower powered than the 8.1L V8 while still having the higher rpm concern. In the larger gas motorhomes, the V8 is paired with an Allison 5 or 6 speed transmission, which helps performance quite a bit.

FYI. "One of the main faults with the early V10 engines (1999 – 2005) was that the spark plugs could blow out of the cylinder head. Ford used a cast iron engine block with an overhead cam aluminium cylinder head design, that uses centrally mounted spark plugs and waste spark ignition." Jun 1, 2024. #13.

  5. v10 vs. 8.1 on a 36 to 38 footer - The RV Forum Community

West Palm Beach, FL. Agree 100% with Ernie. Horsepower is horsepower, and the 8.1L V8 and the 3-valve 6.8L V10 produce pretty much the same amounts of it (340 and 360, respectively). V10's rev higher than V8's, and gas engines rev much higher than diesels for the same hp, but once at their rated hp its all the same.

  6. Ford V-10 in a class A - The RV Forum Community

The Ford V-10 is pretty much a bullet proof engine, but be aware that it does like to wind up a lot on hills. It won't hurt it though, the engine is built for it. The newer V-10's have a bit more horsepower and torque than mine, and an improved 6 speed transmission as well, for even better performance. Jun 2, 2018.

  7. Ford 7.3L V-8 - The RV Forum Community

2,376. Location. Virginia. The 7.3L Ford engine replaces the V10 which is a good engine but fuel hungry, loud, and needs high revs to reach it best torque. The 7.3 was designed to have a lot of low rev torque similar to a diesel engine characteristics. It is also better on fuel consumption than the V10.

The 2-valve version of the V10 produces its rated horsepower at around 5000 rpms and the current V10 has a max rpm rating around 5200. Some earlier years were even higher. Folks accustomed to lower-revving big block V8's often get alarmed at the rpms and associated noise of a V10 (or a V6, for that matter), but its nothing to worry about.

  9. Walk me through driving my Ford V10 down mountain grades

    www.rvforum.net/threads/walk-me-through-driving-my-ford...

My rig will dynamically engine brake and hold at about 45 to 50 MPH on a 6% grade with my loading. The engine is usually at 4500+ RPM. On ocassion the RPM's are over 5000. The Triton V10 really works well in the upper RPM ranges. On steeper grades I have to ocassionally use brakes to hold it at 45 or so.

  10. battery for Triton V10 - The RV Forum Community

Joined. Sep 30, 2009. Posts. 566. I have a 2004 Fleetwood MH with a Ford, Triton V10. The starting battery has the markings F06 which I believe indicates the battery is at least four years old. Last night the battery went out and i had to jump it to get the engine started. I was told by a friend the battery was past due for replacement.

Both the Ford V10 and the GM 8.1L V8 are excellent engines. You won't find an 8.1L V8 in a 1999, though. Have to get to 2001 before any were available (in the Workhorse Wxx series chassis). In 1999 the competing GM engine in a Chevy/Workhorse chassis was a 454 cu in (7.4L) and I like the V10 slightly better than the 454.
