Kollam district (Malayalam: ⓘ), (formerly Quilon district) is one of 14 districts of the state of Kerala, India. The district has a cross-section of Kerala's natural attributes; it is endowed with a long coastline, a major Laccadive Sea seaport and an inland lake (Ashtamudi Lake). The district has many water bodies.
Chittumala Chira (ചിറ്റുമല ചിറ), or Chittumala Lake, is a freshwater wetland located in the Chittumala block of Kollam district. The residents of Perayam, Pavithreswaram, and East Kallada rely on the lake for their drinking water needs. Chittumala Lake spans approximately 55 hectares.
Kollam was the third city in Kerala (after Kozhikode and Kochi) to adopt the shopping mall culture. Kollam district ranks first in livestock wealth in the state. Downtown Kollam is the main CBD of Kollam city. Dairy farming is fairly well developed. Also there is a chilling plant in the city. Kollam is an important maritime and port city.

The Kollam Rural Police District is divided into two subdivisions, each under a Deputy Superintendent of Police (DySP): Kottarakkara and Punalur. There are a total of 29 police stations, in 13 circles. Kollam city traffic is controlled by the City Traffic Police, with a Traffic Police Station located near the Asramam Ground.

Varkala is situated along the Thiruvananthapuram - Kollam coastal highway. It is also connected by the State Highway 64 with the Mumbai-Kanyakumari National Highway 66 which runs at 9 km towards the east. Private buses and KSRTC buses ply along NH 66 and through Varkala from Thiruvananthapuram city, Attingal, Parippally, and Kollam city. [15] Water
