The Dee Stadium was one of two buildings to host a championship game in the tournament's inaugural season. The Xcel Energy Center hosted the WCHA tournament final from 2001 to 2013. The Western Collegiate Hockey Association (WCHA) is the oldest active NCAA Division I ice hockey-only conference beginning in 1959–60, and based in Denver, Colorado.
The 2005 NCAA Frozen Four hockey tournament finals were noteworthy when all four teams came from the WCHA. WCHA teams also won the first 13 NCAA women's titles, which were first awarded in 2001. [5] In 2006, WCHA member Wisconsin was the first school to capture both the men's and women's Division I ice hockey championships in the same season. [6]
A season later, in 1975–76, Bessone guided MSU to its best WCHA conference record of 20-12-0 before Minnesota knocked MSU out of the WCHA playoffs in 6-7 triple overtime loss. [2] Minnesota, who had finished below Michigan State in the conference, received an NCAA tournament bid instead.
The 2020 WCHA Men's Ice Hockey Tournament was the 61st tournament in conference history. It was scheduled to be played between March 6 and March 21, 2020 on campus locations. On March 12, 2020, the WCHA announced the remainder of the tournament was cancelled due to the COVID-19 pandemic in the United States. [1]
By winning the tournament, Lake Superior State received the WCHA's automatic bid for the 2021 NCAA Division I Men's Ice Hockey Tournament. After the 2020–21 season, the men's WCHA disbanded after seven of its members left to reestablish the Central Collegiate Hockey Association. Two other members dropped men's hockey after the season.
