Analysis [ edit ] In 'The Chimney Sweeper' of Innocence, Blake can be interpreted to criticise the view of the Church that through work and hardship, reward in the next life would be attained; this results in an acceptance of exploitation observed in the closing lines 'if all do their duty they need not fear harm.'
The same explanation, both uses of "symmetry" alliterate with "lamb make thee". Obviously it's a matter of interpretation (in this case something I thought up at the spur of the moment) but I think pronouncing "symmetry" as rhyming with "eye" doesn't work at all--even some different choice of words that used those sounds wouldn't work so well.

[2] The rose and worm in the poem have been seen as "figures of humanity", [3] although Michael Riffaterre doubts the direct equivalence of Man as a worm; when Blake makes this comparison in other places, Riffaterre notes, he is explicit about it.
